Promoting Your Freelance Writing

There are so many ways to promote yourself it’d be easy to get carried away and have no time left to write. So have a plan. If you’re new to the business, take baby steps, like starting to use an email signature. If you already have a Website, blog and newsletter, consider adding a podcast or planning to attend a convention. There’s no right way to market yourself, just the way that works for you.

Getting your writing credits up on your own website is an absolute must in my opinion. It's easy and inexpensive to do, and you'll find that, because your credits are on the web, it's easy to query, or apply for a job. And, once and awhile a customer will find you there - a customer you wouldn't have found any other way.

You can hang your sign above your door, or on your website, but don’t expect people to knock down your door the first day. Instead, you’ll need to constantly market yourself — something that can seem distasteful to many of us, I know. But it’s the only way to survive and thrive. Email people (don’t spam), call potential clients, go to events where you might meet potential clients, advertise if you have the money, network. Make this a regular part of your day or work week.
