How to Create Your Own Graffiti

By: Rachel Mork

If you want to create your own graffiti, you may want to first look at examples of graffiti styles for ideas and then try making some of your own. When creating graffiti, there are basic principles that should be kept in mind.

Think 3-D
Graffiti letters are always drawn such that they appear to be 3-D. This involves and requires appropriate shading.

Overlap Letters
The letters in graffiti art usually overlap one another slightly. Take a good look at the words next time you pass graffiti to get the gist of how this looks.

Use Bright Colors
Remember that graffiti is supposed to make you stop and pay attention. It is never subtle. Use contrasting or bright colors.

Super Size
Graffiti has to be big so as to be sure it can be read. You'll have to go larger than you instinctually think you need to if you want it to look right.

Keep It Simple
If you get complex with your design, you'll lose the graffiti feel and will make the letters too complex for readers to interpret. Keep the lines clean and simple.

How to Draw Graffiti
Follow these simple steps to draw graffiti letters on a wall near you:

  1. Paint the background: Mark off the area you wish to paint, then paint it one solid color. Use spray paint to paint it, then use fine brushes to pant solid lines around the area chosen. This will make your graffiti letters stand out.
  2. Spray paint the letters: Use spray paint to paint the letters. You'll want them to be fat and wide so they are easily visible. Remember to use a contrasting color that will stand out.
  3. Outline the letters: Use fine brushes in a contrasting color to clearly define the outlines of the letters. This color should also be a contrasting color. Make sure you choose colors that work well together.
  4. Shadow box: Use shadows in another contrasting color to give the 3-D effect. Make sure you keep the shadows consistent. Imagine a light is shining from one side of the letters, casting a shadow on one side but not the other.
  5. Clean up any fuzzy or unclear areas: Make sure you clean up all the lines so the images are sharp and well defined.
  6. Protect your work: Spray a layer of varnish over the finished product.
