Notable past Emmy winners run the gamut from soap opera divas to comedians to movie stars turned small-screen actors. Making Emmy predictions will always be an inexact science, because the Emmy can elude the most deserving recipients, sometimes for many years.
Emmy Categories
There are several different Emmy awards, each governed by its own ruling body. The Primetime Emmy Awards honor excellence in television programming with a focus on programs that air after 7PM. The Daytime Emmy Awards specifically honor daytime television programming, which includes talk shows and soap operas. There are also 20 regional Emmy award shows, technical awards and a separate category for sports programming.
Emmy Notables
- Susan Lucci is among the most-nominated actresses in Emmy history, for her work on All My Children. She has been nominated a total of 21 times. She finally won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1999.
- One well-known actress who has won a Daytime Emmy is Judith Light. She won a Best Actress award in 1980 and 1981 for her work on One Life to Live, then made the jump to prime-time programs.
- The Ellen DeGeneres Show has won 25 Daytime Emmys in the course of its five seasons.
- For primetime television, some long-running programs received consecutive Best Drama Series Emmys. Both Hill Street Blues and The West Wing won numerous Best Drama Series awards.
- Frasier won 5 consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. With a total of 37 Emmys, it holds the title as the prime-time show with the most Emmy awards.
- E.R. holds the record for the prime-time show with the most Emmy nominations; it received 122 nominations, but only won 22 awards.
- In 2009, Sesame Street won a Lifetime Achievement award. The show has won a total of 118 Emmys.
- The Simpsons, which is the longest-running fictional prime-time TV series, has 24 Emmy awards.
- Even though Seinfeld was a fan favorite, it only received one Emmy award. In 1993 the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.
- All in the Family won three consecutive Emmys. In addition, Carroll O’Connor won an Emmy in 1972 for Outstanding Actor in Comedy Series for his portrayal of Archie Bunker.
- I love Lucy won two consecutive Emmy awards.
- Movie stars who crossed over to the small screen have garnered Emmys. In 2000, Michael J. Fox won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Spin City, and Halle Berry won Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries, Movie or Special for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.
- Carl Reiner is the actor with the most Emmys, at nine. Ed Asner holds seven Emmy awards and Billy Crystal has six.
- Three actresses hold the title for most Emmy awards. They are Cloris Leachman, Mary Tyler Moore and Tracey Ullman. All three women have seven Emmys each.
- In 2002, Oprah Winfrey was honored with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the Emmys. The Bob Hope Humanitarian award is one of the highest honors presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It recognizes the contributions of the recipient to the growth and development of television as a family medium, and as a platform for political and social commentary.
