Most-Nominated SAG Award Nominees

By: Meredith Barnhill

The Screen Actor's Guild is a unique part of Hollywood history and has over 120,000 members who act on screens large and small. To honor a "group effort, both lead and support," nominees are voted on by their peers and each category winner receives a prestigious trophy, called The Actor, during the televised Screen Actor's Guild Awards.

The Screen Actor's Guild began hosting the Screen Actor's Guild Awards in 1995 for movies and television series produced in 1994. Since its inaugural awards show aired on NBC, the awards show has been regarded as one of the most prominent awards shows on television. The most-nominated SAG award nominees include television and film actors in a variety of disciplines.

Actors

Overall in the actor's categories, David Hyde Pierce leads as the most-nominated actor for the SAG awards with 19 nominations and two wins. Kelsey Grammar comes in a close second with 18 nominations for his role on "Frasier," and James Gandolfini trails with 15 nominations for his work in television and film. These three actors are also the top three most-nominated for television SAG Awards at 18, 18, and 14 respectively.

For work in film, George Clooney leads the most-nominated list for the Screen Actor's Guild Awards with four nominations for his work in "Michael Clayton" and "Up In The Air." Alec Baldwin is close behind with three, Martin Sheen rounds out the top three with two nominations. Despite their nominations, neither Baldwin nor Sheen have won an award in the film category.

Actresses

Actress Edie Falco leads the most-nominated list for actresses with 16 nominations for the SAG awards. Allison Janney and Julianna Marguiles are noted for bringing in an impressive 14 nominations each.

Cate Blanchett dominates as the most nominated actress for a SAG Award in the film category. Noted for her work in movies including the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Aviator" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," two of her nominations have gone on to win The Actor. Meryl Streep is also a well-received actress in the film category with 12 nominations from her peers. She won for her leading role in "Doubt." Dame Judi Dench and Kate Winslet tie for third-most-nominated with 10 nominations each. Dench stars in several high-profile movies including "Notes on a Scandal" and "Shakespeare in Love." Kate Winslet's 10 nominations turned into two wins for "The Reader" and "Sense and Sensibility."

Falco's 16 SAG nominations stem from her role on "The Sopranos." Julianna Marguiles brought in 14 nominations during her time on "ER." Five of her nominations were individual and six were for ensembles on the show. Lisa Kudrow and Megan Mallally tie for third with 11 nominations each. Kudrow was most appreciated for her role as on the sit-com "Friends" while Mallally gained notoriety as sharp-tongued Karen on "Will & Grace."
