SAG Award Categories

Recognition for actors and actresses happens beyond the screen and the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, which cover the big and small screen, have been a major showbiz event since their inception in 1995. The plethora of categories ensures that many film and televisions stars have the opportunity to earn the solid bronze statuette called "The Actor."

The SAG awards can be divided into three broad categories, which have sub-categories. The three broad categories are:

-- Film awards.

-- Television awards.

-- Lifetime awards.

Six film awards for movie performances are spread among individuals and entire casts: best actor and supporting actor (male and female), outstanding cast and best performance by a stunt ensemble.

Television awards have up to nine categories; some have separate categories for men and women. This category is subdivided into television movies/ miniseries, drama series, comedy series and outstanding performances by a stunt ensemble in a TV series.

The television movie/miniseries category has two divisions honoring outstanding performances by male and female actors. Comedy and drama series have three awards categories: outstanding performances in an ensemble, and best male and female actors.

The lifetime award is a special category that predates the SAG Awards. It was first established in 1962, and rewards actors who have contributed to upholding the ideals of the professions. Notable recipients include Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Sidney Poitier, Clint Eastwood and Betty White.

The SAG Awards have the distinction of rewarding ensembles and entire movie casts. If awards for stunt ensembles are distinguished, categories for submission include motion picture, prime-time broadcast and cable television, and stunt ensemble.
