Best Action Movies for Kids

The mention of the best action movies conjures images of gun battles and explosions but there are plenty of kid movies that fit comfortably in this genre. Inventive Hollywood writers and directors have for decades been creating movies that keep kids on the edge of their seats.

The Best Action Movies You Can Watch With Your Kids

  • The Incredibles (2004) — With The Incredibles, writer/director Brad Bird has created one of the best Pixar movies to date. The action is non-stop when a family of family of “retired” superheroes is called on to save the world from the evil Syndrome.
  • The Wizard of Oz (1939) — The fantastical, beloved classic is a perfect example of an early action movie. The set pieces and narrow escapes are neatly bracketed with clever musical numbers that keep this moving at a brisk pace. The flying monkeys may still frighten younger children—I know they still freak me out!
  • Spy Kids (2001) — While you may roll your eyes at some of the plotting and dialog in Spy Kids, your children will be mesmerized by the combination of cool gadgets, sibling rivalry and wacky villains. Robert Rodriguez created a strong franchise with his first movie for kids.
  • 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) — This live action Disney movie based on the Jules Verne novel, holds up well as a tight action film. The mysterious Captain Nemo has a number of surprises up his sleeve for those that would try to capture him!
  • The Road to El Dorado (2000) — Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh star in this animated story of adventure and personal growth. When two swindlers find themselves in the mythical golden city, they find action, adventure and a conscience.
  • The Rescuers Down Under (1990) — This underrated Disney film combines great artwork (inspired by the great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki) with great action sequences. As if that weren’t enough, the movie features a “green” theme in its fight against evil poachers.
  • Harry Potter (2001-2009) — After six successful movies, the boy with the lightning scar should need no introduction. Although the later movies become densely plotted, all of the films feature great fantasy and action elements. Some scenes may be a bit intense for the younger set, however.
  • Chicken Run (2000) — Nick Park’s amazing stop motion animation comes to the big screen in this hilarious homage to WWII prison camp escape movies. When a band of chickens realize they’re bound for the potpie factory, they plot a great escape with the help of Rocky (Mel Gibson) the circus rooster.
