Top Ten Tim Burton Movies

By: Aysha Schurman

Most Tim Burton movies are known for their twisted artistic expression, creative genius and unusual stories. Burton is an artist, writer, director and producer of many popular films. Most of his movies involve dark humor and deal with the subject of death. Though his first hit movie, Peewee's Big Adventure, revealed some of his cinematic traits, it was tame compared to his later films.

Batman (1989)
Tim's Burton's biggest money making movie was Batman, which featured Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. Though the choice of Keaton as Batman was widely disapproved before the movie's release, Burton ultimately proved that he had picked the best possible actor for the role.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Tim Burton created a huge hit with his interpretation of this classic tale. Burton casted one of his favorite actors, Johnny Depp in the lead role of the factory owner. The highly visual film was filled with both the humor and dark twists for which Burton is legendary.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Tim Burton brought this old tale to life with his musical version of the story. He relied on his two favorite casting choices, Johnny Depp and Helen Boham Carter, to play the lead roles. The film was filled with Burton's dark humor and exquisite visuals.

Planet of the Apes (2001)
Though the film made high profits, it is considered one of the least "Burtonesque" films Tim Burton has made. Though it involved some of his legendary dark humor, it fell far short compared to his other successes.

Batman Returns (1992)
Tim Burton created this sequel with Michael Keaton to follow up the huge success of his original Batman movie. He also cast Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer as the disturbed villains. Though not as big a hit as hoped, the film was artistically amazing.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
As usual, Tim Burton cast Johnny Depp as the lead role in this classic story. Though a dark tale, the film contained far less of Burton's humor than his other films. The story followed along more serious lines than typically seen from the director, though it can still claim amazing visuals.

Beetlejuice (1988)
This unique film was a huge break-through for Tim Burton. It was his first chance to truly show his twisted humor and bizarre visuals. Though it wasn't one of his biggest commercial successes, it is a fantastic display of his true talent.

Big Fish (2003) Tim Burton showed a more emotional and whimsical side with this film. However, it still had the dramatic elements involved in all of Burton's work. It is one of the few films Burton has created that didn't use Johnny Depp or Helen Bohem Carter. The leads were filled by Danny DeVito and Ewan McGregor.

Edward Scissorhands (1994)
This was the first film that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp worked on together. The unique storyline and visual extremes created a large cult following. The chemistry between Depp and Burton was so magnificent that it led to Burton's frequent use of Depp in many of his following films.

Corpse Bride (2005)
Tim Burton returned to his true love in this film: pure fantasy. It is a shining example of his dark humor and twisted mind. He used the voices of Johnny Depp and Helen Bohem Carter, his two favorite selections, for the film. The movie didn't make as much money as his other blockbuster hits, but it is an absolute must-see for any Burton fan.
