The fashion of rock music

By: Joshua Harris

In the early years of rock and roll the fashion scene was much different, many bands such as the Beatles, Elvis, and Jerry Lee Lewis would wear suits and ties. The would stand in one place, play there songs and just leave. They are considered by many people to be the pioneers of rock music. In those days it was improper to wear certain cloths, have long hair and even to dance a certain way. You would never see the Beatles in anything less than the proper suit and tie.

In the 70's fashion changed dramatically. The bands hair got longer, they were wearing jeans and t shirts instead of the usual suits, and they started rebelling by dancing and jumping around on stage. The mold for rock had been broken. There was no standard dress code that had to be met any longer, though most rock musicians in the 70's would just wear worn out jeans and a t shirt. Leather pants and tacky shirts started to come into the scene some as well. Bands like Led Zeppelin was one of the more fashion oriented bands of the era. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant both loved to shop in exotic places for different cloths so no one else would have the same thing.

In the 80's bands started to go to the extreme with appearances, such as Twisted Sister, Kiss, and Queen. There were men in bands that would dress like women with lipstick, permed hair, and high heel shoes. Than bands like Kiss who would completely paint there faces, wear six inch platform shoes, and wear clothing that would scare the devil. There were a few bands that used scare tactics such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper.

The 90's and 2000's were pretty similar. Rock bands went back to the 70's style with the jeans and t shirts. They coast much more today of coarse, you have to have custom clothing if your going to be onstage today, even if it is only blue jeans and t shirts. That's what makes rock music so great, the fashion is ever changing but the music is always great. Just be thankful that the bands don't have the same taste as Led Zeppelin or Kiss anymore. There are bands today that still use the " shock factor " in there shows such as Slip Knot, ICP, and even Eminim. The music will always be the main focal point no matter how outrageous the fashion gets.
