How to Make Techno Music

By: Rachel Mork

Want to learn to make techno music? It's really not so hard to do if you have a good ear for it and enjoy tinkering with your computer. Try these simple instructions to create your own compositions.

Invest in a Techno Music Computer Program
There are plenty of software programs available for this purpose, both free and for purchase. If you're brand new to making techno music, you'll want to download a reliable looping software program like ACID or Fruity Loops. There are many kinds of software out there; check the online reviews before you download to make sure the program will be compatible with your computer. Check to make sure your computer can support the program and that the program is considered safe.

Establish a Drumbeat
Techno music is based off a percussion or drumbeat sequence. As you play around with the software you've downloaded, you'll discover you have many different beats to choose from. Listen to each drumbeat, tinkering with speed, tone and sound.

Establish the Melody
You'll next need to create a main melody, most likely a looping set of bass notes, to establish the feel of your song. If you don't want to use the bass guitar features, try using clips of existing songs or remixes. The computer program may let you remove certain aspects of an established song or melody, leaving you with just the drums or just the bass guitar, or just the saxophone.

Be aware that when you create your own songs with other people's music, you could run into copyright trouble if you try to publish it. While the law generally allows short samples to be used, anything that resembles the original work too closely could invite legal trouble.

Layer the Song
Use the options available to add notes from other musical instruments, repeating trills and prefabricated sounds. Add and remove sounds from the loop as you experiment to see what you like best.

Develop the Song
You'll want to think of the song as five different parts working together: the intro, the chorus, the climax, the chorus again and the exit. You may want to build the existing sounds you've got playing, add sounds gradually as the song progress or remove sounds as the song nears its end. You may wish to vary the speed throughout the song or keep the speed steady.

Experiment
Making techno music is all about experimenting. Nothing is wrong unless you hate it; nothing is right until you decide you love it.
