How to Make a Native American Flute

Do you know how to make a Native American flute? If you're looking for a simple but beautiful woodwind instrument to learn to play, the Native American flute is a good option. Because of their simplicity, making a Native American flute isn't too difficult.

The first thing you'll need to do to make your Native American flute is to find a suitable piece of wood. These flutes are on the longer side, so a piece of cedar that is around 25 inches long and 2 to 2 ½ inches in diameter works well. Cedar, especially red cedar, is easy to work with and sounds great.

Once you've found your piece of wood, you'll need to hollow it out. The easiest way to do this is to cut the piece of wood lengthwise and remove the inner wood. You can do this with a chisel. Make sure you leave roughly ½ inch of wood all the way around.

Carve the wood using a knife, tapering the end where the mouthpiece will be. Sand the flute until it's smooth. Now, using a spoon chisel, cut a slash into one end of the flute. Using the carving knife that you used to shape the cedar, cut holes into the top of the flute. These holes should be spaced at 10 11/16 inches, 11 7/16 inches, 12 1/8 inches, 13 1/16 inches, 14 inches and 14 15/16 inches. Once you've cut the holes, sand their edges to make them smooth.

Now you can glue the two halves of the flute together. Make sure you let the glue dry completely. Native American flutes have something called a fetish which rests just above where you cut the slash. This can be a small block of wood or you may carve anything you like. Many traditional Native American flutes have animal carvings as fetishes.
