How to Learn Harmonica Tabs

By: Gabriel Miller

Learning harmonica tabs is an important first step for beginning players. Tab is short for tablature, which is a straightforward notation that indicates notes for a tune. Additionally, it often informs the players about the correct fingering to use, and it is a common tool in harmonica instruction. While playing the music on a tab can be difficult, learning the basics of reading one is not.

Holes And Their Numbers
Before playing tabs, you'll need to understand a harmonica's hole numbers. In a standard diatonic harmonica, there are 10 holes. Quite logically, the first hole on the left is hole 1. The 10th hole on the right is, appropriately, hole 10. Figuring out the numbers of the holes between 1 and 10 should be easy.

How Tabs Indicate Notes To Play
If at first you are unfamiliar with the notes on a harmonica, don't worry. Tabs make it possible to play a tune without actually knowing what musical notes you're playing. Once you understand a harmonica's hole numbers, prepare to play. Harmonica tabs represent notes in different ways. Most commonly, arrows are used to indicate whether you should blow or draw. Blowing and drawing means exhaling and inhaling, respectively. Therefore, if the tab has a 5 with an arrow pointing upwards, it is necessary to blow on the 5th hole. Conversely, if a 5 has an arrow pointing downwards, it is necessary to draw on the 5th hole. A tab will contain a rapid succession of these numbers and arrows. Just go at your own pace.

Another form of harmonica tab notation uses numbers with a letter next to it. The tab may contain a number and letter like 4B, followed by 8D. This would mean blow on the 4th hole, and then draw on the 8th hole.

A Word About Rhythm
Tabs do not always represent a song's rhythm very well. In harmonica tabs, rhythm and note succession are represented by notes that are closer together. It is often helpful to begin by using tabs of harmonica tunes with lyrics. This will allow you to match the tab's rhythmic layout with the natural lyrical breaks and cadences of the song.

The Importance Of Learning Tablature
Many beginning musicians are shocked to learn that John Lennon or Muddy Waters couldn't read music. The language used by these brilliant artists was tablature, or tab. For those without the time or patience to learn to read music, tabs offer an efficient and precise substitute. In fact, you'll need to learn tabs in order to play much popular music. Once mastered, they will allow you to make truly beautiful music on your harmonica.
