Several Orson Scott Card books have won or have been nominated for various prestigious science fiction awards, including a Hugo and a Nebula. While he is best known for the five-book Ender's Game series, Card's books include historical fiction and young adult drama genres.
Ender's Game (1985)
Perhaps Card's best-known book, this science fiction novel launched the Ender's Game series about a futuristic society threatened by an alien insect race. Main character Ender Wiggin is trained to lead Earth against the aggression. The plot focuses heavily on a philosophical debate over xenocide, and the book won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award.
Seventh Son (1987)
As the first book in the successful series The Tales of Alvin Maker, the book follows the adventures of young Alvin Miller, who is the seventh son of a seventh son. This distinction gives him magic powers and makes him a target for an evil force bent on his destruction. This book was nominated for both a Hugo award and a World Fantasy award.
Ender's Shadow (1999)
This book follows characters who had minor roles in the Ender's Game series. Ender's Shadow launched a four-book series that is often blended with the other series. Many fans read them in either publication order or in the order the stories take place in the Ender universe.
Enchantment (1999)
Old Russian fairy tales figure heavily in this novel's plot about a scholar who makes his way into a magical land enslaved by a wicked ruler, Baba Yaga. Leading an endangered princess into the 20th century doesn't stop the evil Baba Yaga's pursuit. Blending modern inventions and technology with magic and history, Enchantment is one of Card's personal favorites.
Sarah (2000)
The first book in Card's Women of Genesis series, this is the account inspired by the Biblical Sarah and her life as revealed in the Book of Genesis. This historical fiction novel preserves the information as found in the scriptures, but it takes liberties in fleshing out the characters and events that take place.
