Famous Star Trek Quotes

When discussing famous Star Trek quotes, you must always start with the line from the original series that is most often misquoted: "Beam me up, Scotty." This exact line was never actually said, yet it is one of the most popular quotes attributed to the show.

What's The Real Quote?
Variations of "Beam me up, Scotty," were used throughout the show. They were usually phrased as, "It's time to beam us up, Mr. Scott" or, "Two to beam up, Mr. Scott." Captain Kirk would refer to Mr. Scott as Scotty when the situation was urgent.

Other Famous One-Liners

  • "Live well and prosper." This is the Vulcan greeting, always said while holding up the hand in the Vulcan sign for hello, with the thumb extended and the second and third fingers split to make a "V" shape.
  • "Illogical." Spock is always saying this word or line because anything illogical is puzzling and worthy of investigation for him.

Famous Exchanges
When Captain Kirk and Spock come upon crewmen who has died due to a lethal gas, Spock asks Kirk this question: "Do you know what it is, Captain?" Captain Kirk replies, "Something that can't possibly exist… but it does."

Another exchange between Captain Kirk and Spock:

"You'd make a splendid computer, Mr. Spock."
"That's very kind of you, Captain."

This exchange was a sober moment on the series. The first line is spoken by T'Pau:

"Live long and prosper, Spock."
Spock replies, "I shall do neither. I have killed my captain, and my friend."

Lieutenant Spock was known for his logic and lack of emotion. Although he was both half-Vulcan and half-human, Spock disparaged the emotional responses of humans as if he were incapable of such. In this famous exchange, Captain Kirk challenges Spock's ability to remain unemotional and rational when Spock has an outburst and makes what appears to be am emotional decision to discharge and ignite fuel for the Starship Enterprise. Spock replies to the accusation with the following:

"Quite simply captain, I examined the problem from all angles, and it was plainly hopeless. Logic informed me that under the circumstances, the only logical action would have to be one of desperation. Logical decision, logically arrived at."
"Uh, huh. I see. So you reasoned that it was time for an emotional outburst."
"Well I wouldn't exactly put it in those terms captain, but those are essentially the facts."
"You aren't going to admit that for the first time in your life, you committed a purely human, emotional act?"
"No, sir."
"Mr. Spock, you are a stubborn man."
"Yes, sir."

Spock was always delivering words of wisdom on the show. The following is a quote that basically says the grass is often greener on the other side:

"Ston, she is yours. You may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. This is not logical, but it is often true."
