Wondering how to create your own Star Trek costumes? Don't be intimidated. Follow these simple directions and you'll have a cool Star Trek costume quicker than you can beam aboard the Enterprise.
You'll be best recognized if you choose a well-known Star Trek character to mimic. If you're a man, Spock is the most recognizable and imitable male Star Trek character. If you're a woman, there are several women to choose from, with Uhura or Nurse Chapel being the two most recognizable Star Trek female characters from the original series.
How to Create Your Own Spock Costume
- Get the Hair: Dye your hair black or get a bowl-cut black wig. You can use temporary hair dye that will wash out in a few shampoos.
- Shave: Shave your face so you are clean cut, even the outer ends of your eyebrows. Draw in new, dark brows that slant up like Spock's. You can let them grow back out again; it won't take all that long. If you don't want to shave your eyebrows, put foundation makeup and powder the same shade as your skin on the ends of your brows for the night. Make sure you pencil in dark brows that angle up.
- Get the Ears: You can find Vulcan ears at a party store or online.
- Find the Right Shirt: Buy a tight-fitting light-blue or gold V-neck polyester shirt that fits you like a glove. Attach a one-inch thick strip of black ribbon using iron-on adhesive to the neckline. Make a Starship Enterprise symbol out of black ribbon and gold material and iron it onto your left breast of your shirt.
- Get Black Pants: Look for slim pants that fit somewhat well. Skinny, black jeans are perfect.
- Get Black Shoes: Look for shiny black shoes if possible. Otherwise, anything black will do.
- Don't Forget the Phaser: Find a squarish, silver gun that can stand in for a phaser. Replica phasers can be found in toy stores and costume shops.
Star Trek Woman's Costume
- Get the Hair: Style your hair into a beehive or bouffant style and add a hairband.
- Get the Makeup: Star Trek's women were the height of 1960's style. Glamorous, metallic makeup was all the rage. Go heavy on makeup. Don a pair of large hoop earrings.
- Get the Shirt: Find a scoop neck, tight-fitting, long-sleeved polyester shirt that fits you like a glove. For Uhura, wear red; for Nurse Chapel, wear blue. Iron on a one-inch thick black satin ribbon trim. Make your own Starship Enterprise emblem out of metallic gold fabric and black ribbon and iron it on.
- Get the Skirt: Find a matching, short-short mini skirt. If you can find or make a mini skirt of the same fabric or color as the shirt, all the better. If you can't find a matching shirt and skirt set, look for a mini-dress instead.
- Add Tights: Wear a pair of black nylons.
- Don't Forget the Boots: Don a pair of shiny, black boots that cover your calves completely.
