What is it about the new show Glee?

A Musical Sit-Com?

Everyone loves a good high school sitcom, but "Glee" is not your typical weeknight sitcom or drama. It is an hour-long musical comedy about a high school show choir, starring Matthew Morrison as the do-good choir and Spanish teacher, Will Schuester. His star students are Rachel Berry, a talented, haughty, and driven diva with two gay dads, played by Lea Michele, and Finn Hudson, the not-so-bright football quarterback who was blackmailed into joining the choir, played by Cory Monteith.

Chris Kolfer plays Kurt Hummel, a gay choir member who is also the kicker on the football team. Episode 3, which features Kurt's "coming out of the closet" moment, as well as his acceptance onto the football team resounds as an all-time favorite with Glee fans. It may be your only chance to see an entire football team dance in unison to Beyonce.

Who identifies with Glee?

The writers have a unique eye for things that relate to the last few generations of high school students.  Many people from generation X and Y swear that the writers must be telling actual stories about students they knew in high school, or things that went on at their school. Others love the blend of popular songs like, "All the Single Ladies" by Beyonce, broadway hits from the musical "Wicked", and classic rock songs like Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline."

Glee is out of the ordinary

The cast certainly has a talent for singing, dancing, and drama. The plot twists just keep coming, with a pregnant teenager, a wife pretending to be pregnant, a hilarious love triangle between three teachers, and the frightening villain, Sue Sylvester. Coach Sylverster, played by Jane Lynch, is a favorite of Glee fans. She is unpredictable in her never-ending, politically-incorrect remarks and utter hatred of Mr. Schuester and his band of singing "losers." Yet, no matter what scheme she puts together, it ends up failing, and the Glee Club just grows stronger.

Perhaps this is what fans love most about Glee. No matter what the world of "popular" students or the real world throws at them, the students in Glee are able to make the best of the situation and learn more about themselves in the process. Glee gets into issues like how the needs and cultures of minority students are not taken into consideration, how "normal" students have no idea what it feels like to be a disabled student only able to get around in a wheel chair, and generally identifies with the outcasts.

If you are interested in a show that is "out of the ordinary" in every possible way, check this show out. Glee airs on Wednesdays at 9/8 Central on Fox.
