Tips for Becoming a Mime Artist

By: Julie Knapp

If you're interested in becoming a mime artist, you'll be happy to hear that it's fairly simple. Once you learn a few basics movements and dress the part, you can hit the streets and wow any passersby.

Learn Mime Movements
Mime artists impress with their actions because they never talk or mouth words. Communicating through facial expressions and body language is the way of the mime. Start with the basic mime movements and practice in front of a mirror. Every mime can convey the essence of manipulating objects, whether through the pantomime of feeling the wall, grabbing a rope, climbing a ladder or playing catch with a ball. Try leaning against an imaginary lamp post, pretend to be inside a box or eat a sandwich or ice cream cone. You may want to consider taking a class, renting a video or reading a book on miming.

Put on Mime Makeup
Visit a local shop that sells stage makeup and pick up some white face makeup. You'll also need black eyeliner and red lipstick. Start with a clean, smooth face. Apply the white makeup to your entire face, from hairline to jawline. Next use black eyeliner to draw your eyebrows darker, outline your eyes and outline your lips. Then give your lips a punch with red lipstick.

Wear a Mime Costume
The mime artist's costume is simple. If you go to a local costume shop, you can purchase one already made for you. But you can probably find what you need in your closet, too. You need black pants and a black or white long sleeve shirt. If you want to dress up, a black blazer can add a nice touch. You may also want white gloves. Choose black or white shoes that are comfortable.
