How to Make Mime Costumes

By: Julie Knapp

Mime costumes are easy to make whether you want to perform or dress your child up for Halloween. Because mimes like to focus their-and their audience's-attention on their performance, the look of a mime costume is one built around the idea of simplicity. Look at mime pictures throughout history and you'll see the same basic uniform. Much of the items you need are probably in your closet right now.

French Mime
The classic mime costume is black and white. Start with black pants, then add a black or white long-sleeved shirt. White gloves and a black bowler hat will help make the look. Black or white shoes will keep the costume in sync. If you want to dress up your mime, add a black blazer or black or white bow tie. Suspenders, again in basic black, are also easy accessories for the mime look.

Mime Clown
You can give mime costumes some extra personality by creating a mime clown. Stick to the basic mime costume, but add in a few variations. A silly hat, a bright colored wig, a big bow tie, a striped shirt or big clown-like shoes can all spice up mime costumes.

Basic Mime Makeup
No mime costume is complete without mime makeup. White facepaint, black liner and red lipstick will help you get into character and deliver a top-notch performance.
