Tips for Auditioning

By: Aisling Ash

Auditioning can be one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of a performer's life. For many actors, performing alone is an anomaly, but that's how most auditions are set up. For the best chance of getting the part, follow these tips for auditioning.

Select Quality Material

Choosing your audition material is one of the most important aspects of your audition. Conventional auditions consist of performing a monologue and (if the show demands singing) a cutting from a song. Choose material that allows you to show a range of emotional tactics. Many people choose story monologues, but often the kinds of pieces that allow for the most emotional depth are those where a character is trying to get something from another character (rather than a piece in which a character is simply recalling a story). Though it's not a good idea to choose a monologue from the same show that you're auditioning for, it is a good idea to choose a song or monologue that demonstrates an aspect of the character that you think suits you.

Look the Part

It isn't normal for actors to costume themselves for an audition, but dressing with a character in mind is smart. If the role you're auditioning for is a sweet, all-American character, then it makes sense to wear clothes that helps the director to see you in that light. Audition outfits should always be figure-flattering so the director can get an idea of your body type.

Remain Confident No Matter What

No matter how much you prepare, mistakes will happen. If you skip lines, try your best not to show it. If you completely forget the next line, repeat the previous line to try to recover your momentum. If you repeat the line three times and still can't remember what comes next, simply smile, say "Thank you," and chalk the audition up to experience.

Getting a call letting you know you got the part is an amazing feeling. But as in all occupations in the arts, rejection is also a way of life for the aspiring actor. The most important thing is to remain confident in your abilities and to follow the proper tips for auditioning.
