Are Wrinkle Creams Miracle Creams?

Some people accept the aging process more easily than others do. While you might shrug when looking at the mirror as you see that first wrinkle, others reach for their purse and storm out the door to shop for a wrinkle cream. You might have noticed that there are all kinds of pretty bottles and jars available, all making anti-aging promises. But are wrinkle creams miracle creams?

Everyone knows that there is no such thing as an actual miracle cream. However, scientists have developed anti-aging products that fight the signs of aging by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Ingredients

The most effective substance in anti-wrinkle creams is Retin A. Unfortunately, only dermatologists can prescribe creams containing that ingredient. Most of us have to make do with Retinol, a similar yet less-potent anti-aging ingredient that can be purchased over the counter.

Yet even with Retinol, some caution should be exercised, because not everyone's skin tolerates this product. Before buying, test the cream and wait to see whether or not you experience a burning or itching sensation. In the event that your skin does tolerate Retinol, you should stay out of the sun, as the use of Retinol makes your skin more susceptible to sunburn.

Alpha hydroxyl acids are also popular in wrinkle creams. These acids exfoliate the skin naturally, giving it a glowing and more-youthful appearance. This ingredient encourages the formulation of collagen, which in turn helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. As is the case with Retinol, users of creams containing alpha hydroxyl acids should stay out of direct sunlight.

Another ingredient you might want to look for in anti-wrinkle creams is copper peptides. Like alpha hydroxyl acids, copper peptides prompt the body to form collagen, resulting in healthier, smoother skin.

Correct use

Any anti-wrinkle cream will not perform up to its potential if you only use it when the mood catches you or before an important event. Anti-wrinkle creams should be used at least every day -- preferably twice a day -- and in combination with a facial moisturizer. Even then, it would be unrealistic to expect immediate results. Anti-aging products work best to minimize small facial lines.

With some moisturizers, it's not even necessary to use a separate anti-wrinkle cream. Most facial moisturizers have excellent ingredients to keep skin supple and younger-looking while fighting wrinkles at the same time.

You might have to try a few moisturizers to find out which one is best suited for your needs. And even then, it's a good idea not to use one product for too long. For creams containing alpha hydroxyl acids, you could find that your skin becomes dry after a while.

Pricing

The price of the product will also play a part in which one you choose. While some studies have shown that some $17 anti-wrinkle creams are just as good as a $75 competitor, quality rarely comes cheaply. Commercial creams might be more economical, but organic creams will have more natural ingredients without heavy chemicals that are absorbed into your skin.

Are winkle creams miracle creams? Unfortunately, no, they aren't. There are no miracles in a bottle, and there are no easy fixes. The best you can do is to slow down the aging process of your skin. In addition to using anti-aging creams every day, keep out of the sun and watch what you eat and drink. And remember, your skin is usually a testimony to your lifestyle.
