Wrinkle Treatments for Eyes

By: Teresa Anne Ng

Wrinkle treatments can be costly, so before you spend a small fortune, understand the changes the skin goes through. As we age, the production of a fiber known as elastin, and a molecule, known as protein, which forms collagen, slows down. The layer of fat beneath the skins surface, which helps to plump up the skin becomes thinner, and this is when fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear. Although it seems to happen overnight, the fact is, it happens over a period of time, starting in our early twenties.

The aging process and your lifestyle accelerate the problem, causing premature aging. Sun exposure, frequent squinting, smoking and sleeping on your face all contribute to crows feet, so spending a lot of time outdoors puts you at a higher risk. Hereditary also plays a part in how soon you get crows feet. If you want to know how fast you will age, take a look at your mother.

So how do we prevent crows feet? When going outdoors, use a good sunscreen, and wear sunglasses as well as a hat. Quit smoking if you smoke. If you need glasses, wear them or try contacts--don't squint. Your diet is also important. Eat plenty of foods that contain antioxidants, such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, prunes, apples and tomatoes.

Prevention is better than cure, and when we are young we think we have plenty of time before we have to start thinking about eye wrinkles. Not so. The earlier you start the better, but you can reduce the appearance of crows feet once they start to appear.

The cheapest way is to use an over-the-counter eye cream. These creams are more effective on fine lines rather than deep wrinkles. The best creams to use are those that contain glycolic acid, which helps to remove dead skin cells and helps to accelerate cellular renewal, and collagen, which helps to firm and plump up skin.

If you have waited too long and the wrinkles have gone too deep, then you will be in need of professional help. Visit a skin specialist, and discuss which treatment is most appropriate for you. Treatments available are laser resurfacing, which removes the outer layer of skin, smooths and tightens, fades age spots and minimizes enlarged pores. Collagen injections can also plump up wrinkles. Unfortunately, it doesn't last long, a few weeks at the most.

The best treatment to date is Botox. Botox treatments are non surgical treatments for aging skin. This treatment is done by injecting Botox into the muscle, causing temporary paralysis and weakening the muscle so it doesn't crinkle up. Botox for eye wrinkles can last for up to three months, making it it a better choice then collagen.
