Laser Lipo

Laser lipo does what all those ads for fat-burning pills claim to do, but don't. Also called Smartlipo, laser lipo works by melting the fat with a very thin, laser-tipped tube.

Liposuction without lasers depends on the surgeon manually suctioning and scraping out fat from beneath the skin. This method can leave some scarring, along with bruising and swelling, and the procedure must be done under general anesthesia, requiring weeks or even months of recovery time depending on the size of the treated area.

With laser liposuction, the fat is dissolved instead of being suctioned out. The liquefied fat then leaves the body through tubes. However, there is a debate as to whether or not laser lipo has benefits in comparison to the traditional liposuction procedure. Some doctors claim that the procedure tightens the skin as well, although that remains to be seen in the long term.

Since there are no anesthesiologist charges, laser lipo is somewhat less expensive than surgical liposuction, although this can be like comparing apples to oranges since the most appropriate type of liposuction surgery depends on the amount and location of the excess fat to be removed. Patients with large amounts of excess fat on the overall body are not good candidates for laser lipo, and traditional liposuction is more suitable. Both types of liposuction remove fat cells, but those who have laser lipo should still follow a sensible diet and exercise routine.

Laser lipo works best for small areas like necks and saddlebags. The surgeon can more precisely sculpt parts of the body. In fact, patients are often standing during the lipo, so the surgeon can accurately shape and contour the area, making sure it is natural and symmetrical. As the surgeon works, the laser tightens and cauterizes the skin, stopping bleeding so there is little bruising and no need for stitches. Since only small areas are worked on at a time, sagging skin less of a problem.

Those with large amounts of fat to lose usually undergo surgical liposuction and may return later for laser lipo “touch ups.” This would be something to discuss with your surgeon. Since laser lipo is relatively new, choose a board certified plastic surgeon who has some experience with the procedure, and check references.
