At-Home Microdermabrasion Methods

Microdermabrasion is a very fancy word for a very fancy process that, basically, exfoliates skin. Dermabrasion is a deep and serious sanding down of the skin that usually requires a fair amount of money and time. Microdermabrasion is a softer and quicker form of dermabrasion that helps retexture skin and remove minor scars.

Microdermabrasion is so much cheaper and easier than dermabrasion that you can even buy a microdermabrasion tool for home use. Most of these mini-exfoliating methods spray tiny crystals across the skin, sanding off the top layer of skin. These exfoliating kits come in two categories: for the body and for the face.

Microdermabrasion products for use at home alter the crystal method to create sprays, creams and tools that create almost the same results. Never expect as impressive a transformation from a home kit as you would for a professional session. At-home microdermabrasion products are just like all other home medical or beauty products, as they must remain very gentle to protect consumers.

Creams
At-home microdermabrasion prices vary massively, depending on which technique you decide to use. Creams are usually considered the cheapest home method, and they can still vary from very cheap to very expensive. Microdermabrasion creams use tiny crystals mixed into the moisturizer to exfoliate your skin. However, when applied by hand, these crystals tend to clog more pores than they clear.

Kits
The better at-home microdermabrasion creams include much more than just a cream you apply by hand. Some sort of resurfacing tool is usually included to help achieve the best results. The tool may spin or vibrate and usually include textured sponges, disks or towelettes to aid in exfoliation. Application sponges, rinses and after-care lotion may also be offered as part of the home kit.

Tools
If you don’t mind investing some money in your at-home microdermabrasion kit, there are also fancy tools available that try to mimic the effects of a professional treatment. These exfoliating wands are usually tipped with a thin layer of tiny diamonds. The tip then spins around, causing the diamond to scrub and exfoliate the skin. The diamonds can be a little rough on the face though, causing redness and irritation.
