How to Spot Botox Abuse
When creams, serums, lotions or masks aren't enough, many women battling the wrinkle and crinkle signs of aging turn to more aggressive techniques. Among the options of chemical peels and facelifts is Botox, a highly debated injection procedure. While many women lose a few years off their faces through Botox, others fall victim to what has become known as "Botox face." When is it a touch-up and when is it Botox abuse?
What is Botox?
Botox is an injection into the skin that reduces fine lines and wrinkles. The Botox protein paralyzes muscles and fills in crevices. Botox is typically used on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth, where wrinkles and signs of aging are most prominent. It is a safe procedure and can even be done at home by a professional. There are few side effects other than redness or swelling of the injection site, and it is relatively painless.
What is Botox Abuse?
A little touch up here and there can do a lot of good but the problem with Botox is that it can be addicting, and someone women have trouble identifying when enough is enough.
Botox abuse occurs when a woman continually receives injections, even if she doesn’t need them. In some cases, a woman does not allow for enough time to pass since her last treatment. Too much Botox can result in a waxy look, inability to move eye and forehead muscles and, in severe cases, a perpetually raised eyebrow. Many women also suffer from “Botox induced lazy eye," in which they are incapable of raising one or both eyelids completely.
Many celebrities today are seen with faces frozen by Botox. This is particularly worrisome for Hollywood actresses, as too much Botox can result in the inability to make facial expressions necessary to show emotions in the face. On one hand, they have erased the signs of aging. On the other, they have eliminated their ability to emote.
How to Avoid Botox Abuse
If you wish to restore your youth or if a lack of self esteem calls for a little facial touch-up, be sure to investigate all of your options. There are state-of-the-art treatments being developed every day that do not utilize scalpels or needles. If you feel that you are a good candidate for Botox, just remember a little bit goes a long way. When all else fails, remember that a few crow’s feet may be better than a frozen face.
