Lip Augmentation Options

Lip augmentation

Lip augmentation may be a relatively easy option for people who are not satisfied with the way their normal lips look on their faces. The procedure comes in a variety of forms, some more invasive than others, so do some research to decide which lip augmentation procedure will benefit you.

Lip augmentation is generally divided into two categories: lip injections and lip implants. Both methods have their pros and cons, but the patient’s general health has a lot to do with the success of either procedure. Patients who smoke, have frequent cold sores, lip scars or poor circulation are not considered good candidates for lip augmentation.

Lip Injections
Commonly known as lip plumping, a lip injection is the less invasive option for lip augmentation. A painkiller is applied to the lip area and the surgeon will inject one of several substances that stay in the lip tissues. A variety of products and substances can be used for lip injections. Cow collagen, your own collagen or fat cells and synthetic artecoll are all used to plump lips. However, it’s possible to have allergic reactions to any of these substances. Also, lip injections are not permanent, usually lasting for about 18 months before the effects diminish.

Lip Implants
The implant procedure embeds formed and shaped substances into your lip tissues to make them appear fuller. This process requires general anesthesia, where the patient is put to sleep. This surgery lasts anywhere from one to two hours, generally. Sheets of collagen, fat from your own body or synthetic substances are inserted through a small incision on the lip line, where scarring is minimal.

Risks
All of these substances, injection or implant, have the possibility of being rejected by your body. Your body can even reabsorb more natural substances, such as your own fat or collagen, eventually. Other risks for lip augmentation include infection, bleeding, hardening implants or nerve damage.
