Although LASIK surgery is widely available and increasingly affordable, don't go blindly into your vision correction surgery:  Take the time to do your research and know what to expect.

Do your homework before your Lasik procedure.
Ask all the questions you need to ask about your Lasik procedure in advance of the surgery. While you’ll have a pre-operative visit before the Lasik procedure, it’s not a good time to ask important questions you should have discussed far earlier in the Lasik process. Know in advance whether the price includes pre-operative and post-operative follow up visits, and whether it covers enhancements. Familiarize yourself with your Lasik eye surgeon. Ask about the technology and the procedure. Do all of these things in advance of the Lasik procedure itself.

Follow medical advice to prepare for your Lasik procedure!
This is the single most important thing you can do to prepare for your Lasik procedure. Your Lasik eye surgeon is a professional, so give him a complete medical history and don’t leave anything out about your eye history. Your Lasik procedure will go smoothly if you cooperate with your doctor and follow your Lasik eye surgery center’s medical advice.

Stop wearing contact lenses in preparation for your Lasik procedure.
The Lasik procedure requires that you stop wearing contact lenses anywhere from two to four weeks prior to the surgery, depending on the procedure and the type of contacts involved. Check with your Lasik eye surgery center to see when you need to stop wearing contacts, and adhere to this guideline! If you don’t stop wearing your contacts in time, the shape of your eye won’t be optimal for the Lasik procedure and you may not achieve accurate results or may have to postpone the procedure.

Practice good eye hygiene leading up to your Lasik procedure.
Most Lasik eye surgery centers advise patients to discontinue wearing makeup, creams, lotions, perfumes or hair care products that may get into the eyes prior to the Lasik procedure. To prevent the risk of infection, it’s vital to ensure the eye is clean and provide time for the eye to flush any foreign particles out of the eye prior to your Lasik procedure. Most Lasik eye surgery centers also recommend a thorough eye wash prior to the Lasik procedure.

Arrange for transportation and ample recovery time.
You won’t be driving home after your Lasik procedure, so get a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment. Most Lasik procedure patients require at least a few days of recovery time before getting back to work and other activities, so schedule your Lasik procedure for a time when you’ll have a few days off. Your body needs rest to heal after the Lasik procedure, so do everything you need to do before you go into your appointment so that you can immediately go home and sleep. You’ll feel significantly better if you go home immediately after a Lasik procedure and sleep until the following day. Have eye drops ready in case you experience dry eyes.
