Temporary Airbrush Tattoos

By: Aysha Schurman

Temporary airbrush tattoos are a mainstay at fairs, festivals, parties or any big celebration. From grandkids to grandparents, the stunning art is fun for everyone. They're also a great way to test a tattoo concept before going in for permanent tattoo work.

The paint for an airbrush tattoo is usually non-toxic and perfectly safe for children. By removing the need for a brush and any actual skin contact, the airbrush is also extremely sanitary.

The airbrush technique allows as little or as much paint as you need. You can control the amount of paint for greater picture detail, as well as create neat, blurry effects. Though airbrush tattoos have staying power, they never penetrate or stain the skin and are thus easily removed.

The airbrush for a temporary airbrush tattoo uses a compressor to push air into the ink, forcing it out of the tiny nozzle. The paint is then used to create a design on a patch of clean skin. Depending on the artist, the design can be done with a stencil or freehand.

Airbrush tattoos can last up to two weeks, depending on the person and how fast they shed and regenerate skin layers. If the tattoo is applied properly to clean skin, it should last at least a few days. Be gentle with the tattoo, though. The ink is sitting on your skin, anything like scratching, scrubbing or chaffing will cause the tattoo to flake or fade.

Never scrub the tattoo area dry after bathing, as it will cause the picture to rub off. Gently pat dry the art whenever it gets wet. Avoid any rubbing motions on the ink, such as when drying, washing or applying lotion. Never use any alcohol based products on the airbrushed area, as this will remove that tattoo completely.

There are many stores, both on and offline, that offer airbrush tattoo kits for home use. These kits run the gamut from very cheap to very expensive, depending on your exact needs. You can also buy or make special stencils to use with the airbrush system to help flesh out any ideas or themes desired.
