Aromatherapy Skin Care

By: Julie Knapp

If you want to take your skin care to the next level, you should consider experimenting with aromatherapy skin care and essential oils. Adding citrus, herbal or floral scents or oils will not only benefit your skin, but also your mind.

Aromatherapy skin care products are filled with essential oils blended and formulated to evoke specific emotions and feelings. Some lotions that you'll find at the drugstore may have aromatherapy claims and be scented with particular uplifting or relaxing aromas, but you can also find more prestigious products that include pure essential oils.

You can also purchase and use pure essential oils on their own, but you should be aware that they're very concentrated. Dilute them or use them sparingly.

So which one is right for you? It depends on what you're looking for. Some of the most popular essentials oils include:

  • Lavender can be very relaxing and also soothes inflamed skin.
  • Peppermint, a reviving oil, can help awaken your mind and cool hot itchy skin.
  • Clary sage is best if you hope to feel uplifted; it also helps minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
  • If you have trouble with acne and want to be uplifted, try bergamot.
  • If you prefer a more soothing scent go for mandarin, which will also help acne.
  • Ylang ylang is also a popular scent that is both sensual and soothing and a good oil to use on combination skin.

Essential oils can even help oily skin. While it might seem contradictory, putting an oil on oily skin can balance it. Try uplifting lime or joyful orange.

If you prefer leave the blending of essential oils up to the pros, a visit to a spa for aromatherapy skin care will yield a variety of options. Many salons have included aromatherapy facials and wraps on their menu that are designed to balance and nourish your skin and truly mind body experiences.

Natural and organic beauty products include those that are made with natural ingredients and do not include any chemicals or dyes. However, the terms "organic" and "natural" are not interchangeable.

While no beauty products can truly be 100% green or have a zero carbon footprint, green beauty products should be formulated and packaged to minimize their impact on the environment.
