Makeup Advice for Fortysomethings

By: Teresa Hall

Makeup advice has to change with the times. As we age, our hair, bodies and skin change, so it should be of little surprise that our cosmetics must too adapt to our new bodies. Getting older doesn't mean we have to run out and get all of the latest anti-aging products, but it is wise to investigate products that will best benefit you right now and help keep you looking your best as you age.

Foundation
It is best to avoid heavy foundations that tend to settle into cracks or wrinkles, as it will make you look older and make your skin look less healthy. Look for sheer coverage makeup or whipped foundations that go on smoothly. Mineral makeup tends to be a great foundation approach for aging skin - it goes on light and sheer.

Concealer
Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly. Lighter concealer tends to accentuate discolorations and can worsen that puffy look under the eyes.

Eye Shadow
Once upon a time, it was believed that women over a certain age should avoid all the flashy glittery eye shadows that younger women tend to use. While true to a degree, you can get away with a shimmer here and there. Just be careful of the color you choose and stay away from neon colors and bright pastels - that will draw attention to wrinkles and droopy eyelids.

Blush/Bronzer
Skin in your forties tends to change in tone. You might find yourself with blotchy red tones or darker age spots. Avoid brown shades of blush or bronzers that have a tendency to accentuate these discolorations. Also, when it comes to applying blush, stay away from the apples of your cheeks and instead place the blush a bit higher to help lift the face.

Lipstick
Keep it soft. Lipstick that is really dark can create a harsher effect on the skin tone and draw attention to any lip wrinkles.

Eyeliner/Brows
Keep both your eyeliner and brow powder light. Hard lines will age the eye area.

Powder
A setting powder is often needed but many make the mistake of over-powdering. This is where mineral makeup can be of use again. A light dusting of mineral makeup will complete your look more naturally.

We don't have to avoid our favorite cosmetics as we age; we just need to learn how to tone it down to be age appropriate. Without a doubt, you can look fabulous as a fortysomething.
