Make Your Own Natural Solid Perfume

Natural solid perfume is what is sounds like: a solid rather than liquid form of fragrance. Solid perfumes are easy to make, apply and carry with you; many people find the formula results in a more even scent than traditional liquid perfumes.

Creating a basic, solid fragrance is as easy as mixing scented oils and melted beeswax. Once the wax cools and hardens, you have a solid perfume. If you’re looking for something historically authentic, toss out the beeswax and use plain animal fat instead.

If you don’t happen to be trying to recreate an ancient Egyptian fragrance, there is a simple way for anyone to make a solid perfume in the comfort of their own kitchen. You need an assortment of essential oils, pure beeswax and a carrier, such as apricot kernel oil.

You can use as much of essential oils as desired to create your solid perfume. You can even pour some store-bought perfume into the mix. The beeswax needs to be as pure as possible, not a product meant for candles or other crafts. The carrier should be quality oil, preferably with some moisturizing benefits.

Many stores offer solid perfumes in stylish compacts that are hard not to drool over. However, if you’re making your own solid perfume, you’re probably a little more budget-conscious than that. Create your own solid perfume compact by re-using an old lip-gloss container, makeup compact or fancy pillbox.

Basic Solid Perfume Recipe

  • 1 tbsp Grated beeswax
  • 2 tsp Jojoba oil
  • 16 drops essential oil (12-16 drops, depending on personal taste)
  • 1 small glass jar (the shorter and skinnier, the better)
  • 1 small cooking pot
  1. Place the beeswax in the small glass jar. This will help prevent losing the wax to a big pot. Slowly melt the wax over low heat in a small pot filled with 2-3 inches of boiling water.
  2. Once the wax has started to melt, turn the heat off. Secure the jar with a hot-pad covered hand and stir in the Jojoba and essential oils. Make sure to melt the wax completely while mixing everything together well. Pour the mixture into a container and let cool.
  3. When the perfume is cool and solid, cover the container with a lid and use at your convenience. The recipe makes about 2 Tbsp of solid perfume. If properly covered, the fragrance should last many months or a couple of years, depending on the exact mixture.
