Disco Fashion Trends

By: Lisa Bower

Whoever said disco fashion was on the way out was clearly only dreaming-many famous disco looks are actually making a comeback. Disco fashion trends are an over-the-top tribute to Lycra, gold lame and polyester. The clothing from this time period was all about excess: hot colors, sequins and clothing that worked well with the glare of a disco ball or ultra violet lights. Though disco clothing was most popular in the 1970s, it is making a comeback.

Professional dancewear made out of shiny tight fabrics and sequin tops are definitely an important piece of the disco fashion trends. Disco clothing was not intended for the morning hours. Thus, people felt as if they could go all out. Thus, it was not uncommon to see women dancing the night away in hot pants made out of gold lame paired with a sequin tube top or bandeau. Such clothing made it easy to dance the night away because it made moving easier.

You really can't talk about disco clothes and not mention pantsuits, commonly called leisure suits. Often, these suits were made out of polyester, were form-fitting and seen in light colors. This trend was often paired with gold medallion necklaces and white shoes and belts. The top of the leisure suit was such that it was unbuttoned to expose the man's chest area.

Similarly, bell-bottom jeans and pants are synonymous with the disco era. Men would wear jeans and leisure suits with the flared bottoms. Women also wore bell-bottomed jeans and linen slacks with flared legs.
