Hippie Chic: Modern Day Oxymoron?

By: Lydia Nicoll

You don't have to limit rocking a bohemian or hippie style to your casual wear. If you're a free spirit living in a corporate world, there are ways for you to stay true to your hippie roots while still looking professional.

Hair
Long hair is in style again, so it is relatively easy in the workplace to let your hair down and let it flow all day long. Little braids of the flower child kind are also in fashion, so wear a few from the crown of your head or French braid your hairline to get your bangs out of your face. Long blunt bangs, the kind that dominated fashion magazines in the 1960s, are also flattering and popular even now. This style, as demonstrated by Anne Hathaway in the 2006 film "The Devil Wears Prada," are perfect for the heat of the summertime and can look great even with the dressiest of office attire.

Jewelry
Hippie jewelry is another fabulous way to be hippie chic and dressed up at the same time. Turquoise and silver necklaces, bracelets and funky rings look great in contrast with black business suits. Peace sign jewelry is also very stylish now; large glass, wood and plastic beaded jewelry looks great whether paired with a plain oxford shirt or an afterhours cocktail dress.

Clothes
Fashions of the hippie era were known for their bold colors and big patterns, so find blouses in colorful paisley or floral prints. Many brands are marketing peasant style tops that have a modern updated look with the same easygoing hippie flare. Get a fitted blazer in a great camel or mocha suede that can work with both work trousers and denim jeans. Maxi dresses that are ankle or floor length are huge this year, can easily be dressed up or down and come in many different hippie styles.

Other Accessories
Scarves are another great hippie chic accessory that can be worn around the neck or in your hair. Purses in suede or bags with long straps and fringe are also widely available these days and are perfect for adding a dash of hippie style to a work outfit. Protect your eyes from the sun with aviator sunglasses that are not only in style again, but also flattering for most face shapes.

It's not hard to incorporate your personal hippie style into the work week with a few chic wardrobe choices. Having a 9-to-5 doesn't mean sacrificing style so always remember to have fun with your clothes and accessories and you'll easily be able to embody peace, love and good fashion sense.
