Punk Fashion Looks

Punk fashion varies from region to region and subculture to subculture. In order to establish your own look, you’ll need to take ideas from the general punk fashion scene and then tweak the look until it becomes your own.

Classic punk fashion relies on ripped leather or denim accessorized with chains, spikes, safety pins, studs and piercings. You’ll want to stock up on funky tee shirts with symbols, designs and sayings. Invest in plenty of black and neon colors. Top the look off with brightly colored dyed hair in radical punk haircuts such as an asymmetrical cut or a spikey, uneven, shaggy cut.

If you want to get more hardcore punk, you’ll need to invest in some combat boots, military shorts, bandanas and work pants. Dye your hair bleach blond or blue-black and dye a streak or the tips a contrasting color. Wear your hair in a Mohawk or variation of a Mohawk or shave part of your head. Make liberal use of body piercings.

Those interested in anarcho punk fashion should stock up on all black clothing, combat boots, black denim jackets with studs and spikes and tee shirts with the anarchy sign on them. Dye your hair bleach blond or something vivid that will contrast with the all-black apparel. A nose and eyebrow pierce is standard.

If you dig crust punk fashion, wear your hair in dread locks and rip and then sew patches on your clothes or buy everything from a second-hand store. Go political with your statement, whether it’s modern day politics or general philosophical statements via clothing and actions. You may choose to refuse to wear leather because you respect animal rights or wear tee shirts that demand release of prisoners of war somewhere.

Skater punk fashion is less severe. Wear baggy pants and tight tee shirts advertising for punk bands or causes. Wear your hair long and shaggy and asymmetrical, and limit dying to milder colors.

Punk Fashion Designers
Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLauren are two of the most famous punk fashion designers. However, most punk fashion is created on the street by individuals seeking self expression.
