60's Fashion Looks

By: Aysha Schurman

60's fashion reflected the spirit of revolution in the air. Skirts grew short while hair grew long. Patterns were bright and busy. Hippies were on the rise and James Bond was making his cinematic debut.

Women
Short, A-line miniskirts and tight tailored pants were hot in the early 1960's, especially when paired with a turtleneck shirt or sweater. Interesting knits and thick yarns were very popular, as were tweed and other thick materials. Knee-length skirts with matching coats were particularly popular uses for the thicker materials.

The hippie influence in the mid to late 1960's prompted many women to wear jeans and slacks, not to mention hip-hugging and slightly flared bell bottom pants. Bright patterns and ethnic influences could also be seen in most trends on the 1960's. India and Africa were looked to for most 1960's fashion design inspiration.

Men
Men started the 1960's in sleek suits. Pants and jackets alike were short and straight initially, but bright colors and double breasted jackets became the norm as the decade progressed and fashion loosened up. Ties became very thick and very bright, when they were worn at all. The collarless Nehru jacket also became very popular.

As the hippie movement grew in 60's fashion, men's clothes became much more casual. Slightly flared bell bottom jeans became the norm, as did fun T-shirts. Turtlenecks and interesting knits also started to show up. Ethnic influences could be seen in casual clothing, such as the popular African dashiki.

Fashion Trend Hits
The cute, A-line miniskirts of the 1960's were adorable. The sweet line with the sexy hem made a perfect combination. These skirts seem slightly more modest then their super-tight counterparts. A slightly longer version of the 1960's skirt is a great way to add class and sensuality to any modern wardrobe.

The bright, double breasted, men's jackets in the 1960's were a far cry from the dull jackets of the 1950's. These fun and trendy looking coats are a great way to dress up some jeans for a casual date.

Fashion Trend Misses
Bell bottoms in the 1960's were not quite as bad as the bell bottoms in the 1970's. Nevertheless, they were not particularly flattering on most people, male or female. They tended to make the thighs and rear look too big or too small-few people were lucky enough to look just right.

The thick men's ties of the late 1960's were just plain silly looking. The extra wide ties made every man look like he was a little boy wearing his daddy's oversized necktie. It was an unflattering and childish look that is best not repeated.
