How to Wax

By: MeganSteggan

Are you sick of paying between ten and twenty dollars per eyebrow or lip wax? Start waxing yourself.  You can get a wax warmer at most beauty supply stores along with the wax, removal strips, and other waxing necessities.

First, start with a clean face. Set wax warmer to a medium temperature and let sit for at least 20 minutes.  Never set the wax warmer to the highest setting or painful burns may occur. When wax is liquid, but still slightly  thick it is ready to use. Use a skin prep liquid to remove leftover oils and makeup. Note that some skin preps contain a numbing agent that will decrease pain. Using a thin wax applicator stick apply wax in the direction of hair growth, then apply a wax removal strip on top. Lightly rub fingers over strip also in direction of hair growth. Hold skin taut and quickly pull strip in the opposite direction of hair growth. Note that applying pressure on the waxed area immediately after removing wax strip can decrease the pain. When you are done waxing, use a liquid wax remover to get off any leftover wax and some aloe to reduce redness and inflammation. Never double dip your stick. Double dipping can put infection causing bacteria in your pot of wax.

When trying to choose a shape, go conservatively at first until you get the hang of it. You can always tweeze any leftover hair, but you can't put it back on when you take it off, and it can take what feels like forever to grow back. You should not wax at least 48 hours before a special occasion because makeup does not adhere to the skin properly immediately following waxing procedures. A good way to decide which brand to go with is to get your eyebrows waxed at a trusted salon, and ask them what brand wax they use. Remember that different waxes are for different parts of the body. Many people use a multi-purpose soft wax or a wax for sensitive skin on their eyebrows. It is not recommended to use a hard wax on your face. Keep them up as needed, or every 2-4 weeks.
