What Is Good Personal Hygiene?

By: Rachel Mork

It's important to practice good personal hygiene so your coworkers, peers and friends will be comfortable in your presence. Good personal hygiene will keep you healthy and socially presentable.

Hygiene Tips For Controlling Body Odor
To keep those you know from wrinkling their noses or shying away when you come close, practice the following steps:

  • Shower daily: Use soap and water, pay special attention to groin and armpits, and rinse well before drying. Shower after getting sweaty, too.
  • Use deodorant: Apply deodorant at least once a day. Beware of deodorants with strong fragrances; make sure the odor does not compete with other fragrances you may use.
  • Change clothing often: Change clothing daily; only re-wear an item of clothing if it definitely does not smell like your body odor. Air clothing out between wearing; wash clothing with laundry detergent as soon as it begins to smell too much like the real you. Change socks at least twice a day, especially after exercising. Use powder inside socks if feet tend to get sweaty and are prone to fungal infections.
  • Use fragrances wisely: Apply fragrance daily, allowing one or two complementary scents to define you. Avoid strong fragrances that may overwhelm people with sensitive noses.

Hair Hygiene Tips
Keep hair shiny and clean with these tips:

  • Shampoo, condition, brush: You may only need to shampoo your hair every other day, but you will want to spruce it up with a light misting and a good brushing every day.
  • Pluck as necessary: Use tweezers to pluck unsightly hair in between brows, on your upper lip or chin.
  • Shave, wax or trim: Keep your body hair in check by waxing, shaving or trimming to keep it neat and defined.

Dental Hygiene
Bright and white teeth are more likely if you follow these dental hygiene tips:

  • Brush teeth: Brush teeth three times a day. Be sure to brush tongue to eliminate bacteria.
  • Floss: Floss between teeth using dental wax at least once a day to remove plaque and debris.
  • Rinse: Rinse using mouthwash or dental rinse.
