When a man chooses from the multitude of mustache types available to him, he is making both a style and personality statement. While men used to acquiesce to the styles of the day, mustache standards are much more flexible today, which means that men can now focus on what they want to wear and what looks best with their face types. Mustache art now gives a man an opportunity to get creative and have some fun.
Dali Mustache
Artist Salvador Dali was known for his very long, thin mustache, which he styled so that the ends bent up at a near 90 degree angle. This style of facial hair is only one of his numerous legacies.
Fu Manchu
A Fu Manchu is a long mustache that drops down around the sides of the mouth to hang beyond the chin.
Goatee
A goatee is a mustache and beard combination that only appears around the mouth. Facial hair is grown on the upper lip, around the corners of the mouth and on the chin, but all other facial hair is shaved. This look is particularly popular on professional baseball diamonds and college campuses.
Handlebar Mustache
A handlebar mustache is bushy and twirls upward at the ends. These mustaches feature less of a sharp upturn than the Dali, but instead curl upward. If you imagine the villains of old silent films, you're imagining handlebar mustaches.
Hungarian Mustache
Hungarian mustaches feature hairs that are styled from the middle of the upward lip out to each side of the mouth. Bigger and thicker than a traditional mustache, they tend to feature longer hairs, but the roots of those hairs still do not extend past 1 ½ centimeters beyond the outer corners of the mouth.
Traditional Mustache
A traditional mustache grows in naturally and requires minimal trimming. The roots of hair in a traditional moustache not extend more than 1 ½ centimeters beyond the outer corners of the mouth.
Toothbrush Mustache
This very small, rectangular mustache earned its name because it looks like the bristles of a toothbrush. This mustache gained fame as a signature of Charlie Chaplin's film persona; it became infamous when Adolf Hitler also famously wore the style.
You may have it a little easier when it comes to grooming, but you still have some work to do to look your best. For starters, washing means more than splashing water around on your face. Use facial cleansers matched to your skin type to deep-clean your skin. Then move on to the details, like trimming any beard or mustache and removing any stray hairs on your face. |
I have learned that most men don't like to shave. At least, the men I know would rather forego this male ritual. I've heard men complain of getting razor burn, (the red, sore bumps), after a shave, and I've actually seen men walk around with bits of spittle and toilet paper dotting their faces. Men may be surprised to learn that women sometimes have the same troubles when they shave their legs and armpits. |
It may seem like an easy thing to do, but growing facial hair can cause some men nothing but worry and trouble. Getting a nice, groomed look takes more than just dropping the razor and shaving lotion. |
