Tips on Daily Skin Care for Men

By: Julie Knapp

Daily skin care for men is just as important as it is for women. If you take proper care of your skin, you can prevent blemishes and premature aging. Here's a look at what you should stock inside your medicine cabinet.

First, you should start with a good cleanser. Choose one that's gentle and soap free for the best results and to prevent your skin from getting too dried out. Cleansing your skin, both in the morning and at night, not only removes the oil and dirt accumulation but it helps prevent acne by washing away bacteria. You should always cleanse before you shave to soften hair, open pores and ensure that bacteria won't enter the hair follicles.

For shaving, it's good to use a moisturizing shaving cream. Look for ingredients like aloe vera and stay away from gels containing drying alcohol. If you suffer from acne, shaving can be tricky and keeping that beard at bay can make a breakout worse. An electric shaver will help eliminate the change of cutting your blemishes and irritating your skin further.

Post-shave, moisturize your skin. An after-shave can work, as long as it doesn't have drying alcohol on the ingredient list. But in order to cut down on the amount of products you use, look to your moisturizer to do double duty. Choose one that has an SPF 15 or greater to keep your skin safe from the sun-even if you're not going to the beach, you'll get exposure during your day. If you have acne prone skin you might want to choose a moisturizer to combat your problem-look for one made for oily skin or one with salicylic acid.

If you have acne, a spot treatment is a good extra to help blemishes heal. Or consider a three-step acne kit, which will include a special face wash, moisturizer and toner or spot cream. This way you'll be sure you're doing everything you need to do without over doing it. The last thing you want to do for acne prone skin is to layer too many moisturizers, after-shaves and more on top of your pimples. Consult a dermatologist to determine the best regimen for your skin.

You may have it a little easier when it comes to grooming, but you still have some work to do to look your best. For starters, washing means more than splashing water around on your face. Use facial cleansers matched to your skin type to deep-clean your skin. Then move on to the details, like trimming any beard or mustache and removing any stray hairs on your face.

Mustache types have become so widespread and accepted that what style a man chooses can say much about his personality and sense of style.

Knowing how to trim a beard is knowledge every man should possess.

I have learned that most men don't like to shave. At least, the men I know would rather forego this male ritual. I've heard men complain of getting razor burn, (the red, sore bumps), after a shave, and I've actually seen men walk around with bits of spittle and toilet paper dotting their faces. Men may be surprised to learn that women sometimes have the same troubles when they shave their legs and armpits.

It may seem like an easy thing to do, but growing facial hair can cause some men nothing but worry and trouble. Getting a nice, groomed look takes more than just dropping the razor and shaving lotion.
