Curly Hair Updos

By: Aysha Schurman

It may seem a tremendous task, but women with curly strands can learn to tame their mane. You aren't doomed to a lifetime of poufy hair or unruly styles. With a few tricks anyone can easily create modern, romantic and/or stunning curly hair updos.

Messy
Messy is the easiest curly hair updo to create. All you need to do is scoop those curls together, twist them into a bun and secure to the back of your head. You can use ponytail bands, barrettes, hair clips or bobby pins, it all just depends on your personal preference. Let loose some of those wild ringlets around your face and neck. Messy but sexy!

Romantic
For a romantic updo, wash your hair the day before you create the style, not the same day as you need to wear the style. This prevents hair from being to frizzy and soft. Try any one of the many curly hair conditioners to ensure as many ringlets and spirals as possible. Use a fine brush to pull the top half of your hair smooth and flat. Secure the top half of your hair in a ponytail at the crown of your head.

Pull the lower half of your hair together, smooth but not flat. Wind the lower half of the hair around your ponytail completely, twisting the locks as you wind around, and secure with several bobby pins. Use a pick to carefully pull some ringlet's down around your face. Use hairspray, gel or your favorite curly hair care products to help set the curls and keep the upswept hair in place. You now have a romantic and eye-catching hairstyle.

Elegant
For an elegant updo, split your hair into two even sections at your natural hair part. Use a comb to make sure the part is straight and smooth out the hair closest to your head. Clip or tie one section secure so you can use both hands to work with the second, free section.

Starting at with the hair in the front, right above your forehead, twist the section around tightly. Keep twisting until you reach just past your ears and secure with a fashionable barrette. Untie the other section of hair, repeat the twisting process and secure with a matching barrette. Gather the remaining tresses together to turn and tuck into a French twist. Secure with bobby pins and hairspray.
