Curly hair can either be a blessing or a curse. Naturally curly hair can take an extended amount of time to style, especially when humidity levels are at their worst. However, managing curly locks doesn't have to be a curse or take hours of time to style. Ladies with loops of ringlets can easily learn how to tame curly hair in five easy steps.
Step 1 -- Washing
Many hair care professionals recommend limiting the amount of times curly hair is washed. Since curly hair is often dryer, frequent washings can strip the hair and scalp of natural oils. The frequency depends on your hair type, which can vary from washing every other day to no more than twice weekly.
When washing curly hair, always use a conditioner after shampooing. There are shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for curly hair. On nonwashing days, a leave-in conditioner can be applied to your hair to minimize frizz.
Step 2 -- Drying
Naturally curly hair tends to frizz and dry out easily. To avoid some of the damage that can lead to frizz, avoid dry, hot hair such as that produced by blow dryers, curling irons and straight irons. Whenever possible, allow wet curly hair to dry naturally. Excess water can be lightly removed with a towel but avoid rubbing the hair excessively.
Step 3 -- Brushing
One of the biggest mistakes you can make with curly hair is improper brushing. In fact, do not brush the hair -- use a wide-toothed comb or hair pick to remove tangles. Working in sections, use a comb or pick to detangle the hair while the hair is still damp.
Step 4 -- Moisturizing
Apply mousse or another type of styling product to your hair while the hair is slightly damp. Choose a styling product that provides moisturizing ingredients to help prevent the hair from becoming frizzy. Generously apply a styling product evenly throughout the hair to lock the curls into place.
Step 5 -- Styling
After the styling product has been applied, you can style the hair or let it simply hang. If you choose to place your hair up, remember to touch the hair as little as possible to prevent frizzing. After styling, you can enjoy the rest of your day with manageable, frizz-free curls.
