Stains from hair dye colors happen to even the best at-home colorists, but there's no reason to panic about those marks behind your eyes, along your hairline or even on your neck. Removing hair dye from skin is a simple process and in most cases, can be done gently and without further irritation.
Some products that you have on hand in the medicine cabinet can do the trick. A good first option is toothpaste since it won't irritate your skin like some other cleaning solutions. This works best if you were using a lighter dye color, but you can give it a try no matter which color you are using. And, not surprisingly, grainy varieties work best for this task. Rub it directly on the stain for a minute or two and rinse.
Or, if that doesn't work and the area is small and not near your eyes, try nail polish remover. While it's obviously best known for removing nail polish, it can get rid of hair dye, too. Put some on a cotton ball or a cloth, and rub over the stained area a few times. If the stain still won't budge, try rubbing alcohol in the same way, but again only if the stained area is small and away from your eyes.
You can also try a few different soaps. Start with a solution of dishwashing soap mixed with equal parts of baking soda or lemon juice. Or, for a double whammy, use dishwashing liquid that already contains lemon and mix that with baking soda. Scrub the stained area with the mixture and a damp washcloth until you see the spot start to fade.Still not gone? Get some Lava soap. Lather it up with a washcloth and the warmest water you can stand. Start scrubbing away at the stain using the cloth. Repeat the process a few times until the stain is gone. If all else fails, commercial hair dye remover will work. You can purchase it at your local beauty supply store. Next time, be sure to wear gloves, and place a towel securely over your shoulders. You may even want to consider putting a thin layer of petroleum jelly or conditioner along your hairline to prevent the dye from penetrating your skin.
