Elegant Half Updos

By: Aysha Schurman

Stunning half updos mix the freedom of a loose hairstyle with the formality of an upswept hairstyle. Elegant updos don't have to be rigid or extreme. What this means is that, when it comes to hairstyles, you can almost always have your cake and eat it, too.

Mini-bun
A popular half updo is the mini-bun. You separate your hair into two sections, one in the front and one in back. Smooth the front section and pull it up and back towards the crown of your head. Gather the hair like you're going to make a ponytail and then begin twisting it as you coil the strands into a bun. Secure in place with a few bobby pins and decorate with almost anything.

You can stick a single flower from the middle of the mini bun or a fancy hair comb can shoot from underneath the top. You can twist the bun underneath the front section to create a slightly bouffant style or do the bun in a knot for a funky touch.

Curly display
A cute style for a more youthful look is the standard half ponytail. Make sure your hair is smooth and straight. Part your hair into a front section and back section. Pull the front section into a ponytail at the crown of your head. Curl the ponytail hair into many perfect ringlets. Leave the back section of your hair straight and free to frame your perfect curls.

Knotted crown
A knotted crown hairstyle is one of the fun and funky ways to create formal updos. Part your hair into front and back sections. Take the front section and split it down your natural part. You'll be creating a modern looking design around each side of your head.

To create the knotted crown hair style, start pulling and twisting the hair from the temple. Every few inches, take the hair and make a loose knot. Secure the knot with a bobby pin, and then continue twisting. Repeat the process on both sides of the head until you reach the back. Leave the ends of your hair sticking up or down; use a barrette or bobby pin to secure the whole style in place.
