How a Digital Perm Works

By: Teresa Hall

A digital perm might seem like a quirky idea, but it is the latest in the movement to bring a more precise approach to the best possible perm. Now you can get a perm that uses electricity, heat and specific solutions to create a smoother perm - and it's all done with computers.

With a traditional perm, the stylist wets the hair and places the rods or curlers along with solution in the hair to get the hair to set into the desired curl. The client then sits under a dryer until the perm can heat set, at which point the stylist then removes the rods and the perm is ready.

Originally, perms were rolled with metal rods and an electrical current was sent through the rods. The rods would heat up and burn the curl into the hair. This method often created a problem, however, as the temperature generated by the electricity passing into the rods was too high and caused serious damage to the hair.

Now with the advent of the digital perm, the process is the same as usual, but, the electric current is computer controlled, which means it is possible to maintain a desired temperature. This causes almost no damage to the hair and results in longer lasting, better curls and healthier hair.

You can also control the type of curl you get with a digital perm. If the perm is done on dry hair, the curl becomes much more prominent. When this process is performed on wet hair, the curl tends to be looser.

This type of perm is very popular among women with very straight long hair and women with very lightly curly hair. A digital perm works with any rod length or width.

Not all of us have hair that will hold a curl. For example, my hair is long, fine and straight with a few natural waves. I have had many perms, professional and home perms. None of them lasted very long. I did everything right.

Perming your hair at home is not as easy as some people think. There is a lot involved in this than just applying a perm solution and you think you will have a great curl. You have to remember you are applying a chemical to your hair and have to think about what type of curl you want to achieve before doing this or you will end up with a head of frizz and no curl.
