Long Hair Care

By: LuAnn Schindler

There's no short cut to long hair. Long hair care takes work. The key to a healthy head of hair begins with the perfect cut. Since hair grows approximately six inches a year, you'll need to practice patience and keep your hair healthy while it grows.

In the Beginning
If you've just decided to let your hair grow out, or if you already possess a full head of really long hair, the first step is to trim away damaged ends. Damaged hair progresses from the ends upward, so it is important to get rid of the damage before it advances. Make an appointment to have your hair trimmed every eight to ten weeks. Scheduling regular dates with a stylist to trim dead or split ends will keep hair looking and feeling healthy. The condition of your hair will determine the frequency of visits to the salon.

Product Perks
Since you're investing time in preserving long locks, investing in quality products and equipment will improve your look, too. While salon and over-the-counter products might have similar ingredients, the amount of those in each bottle is what matters. You might spend some time trying out products to determine which one leaves your hair looking its best. Focus more on matching a product to your hair type than on spending a lot of money, especially if you have damaged, brittle or processed hair. No matter your hair type, apply deep conditioner once a month.

While you are at it, take care of your scalp. When you shampoo, try to massage the scalp. Avoid overwashing, which can dry out your scalp, and underwashing, which can make it oily. You don't have to wash your hair once a day, unless it becomes oily quickly.

To Comb or Brush?
Meant to assist in detangling hair, wide-tooth combs should be used on either wet or dry hair. Separate hair into small sections and begin combing near the ends.

Brushing hair keeps hair healthy and adds shine. Buy a natural-bristle brush, which works the best for styling. Never brush wet hair; this is when the hair shaft is at its weakest state. When brushing, lean forward so hair falls over your face and brush through from the nape of your neck to the ends. To reduce static, run your hand over your hair. This process will help smooth out the hairstyle.

A large round brush is best for long hair. It will add curl and definition to hairstyles. Vent brushes contain a hole in the base and allow air to pass through the brush for faster drying.

Avoid the Heat
When it comes to long hair tips, the best idea is to protect your hair from heat. Styling aids, including blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons, damage hair, especially if the follicle is already dry. If blow drying is imperative, use a leave-in conditioner to protect your locks. When time is of the essence and blow drying is a must, use a cool setting, and direct the air flow from roots to ends. Blast the cool shot button at the end of styling if your blow dryer comes equipped with one. This will set the style. In general, keep use of styling appliances to a minimum so hair retains its healthiness.

Your Hair Is What You Eat
Healthy eating promotes long, healthy hair. The right vitamins and minerals give hair a healthy shine. If you start taking a daily vitamin, the benefits won't shine through your hairstyle for two to three months. Including foods rich in vitamin B-6, folic acid, magnesium, sulfur, zinc and beta-carotene will not only give you a daily dose of required nutrients, but a good diet will help add sheen to your mane.
