To make good medium-length, choppy, layered haircuts, use a razor to cut the layers into the hair. Using a razor, rather than scissors, gives the cut hair a different texture and, if done properly, gives your hair more volume.
Why Layer?
Layering hair can turn a simple hairstyle into an elegant, fashion haircut. Plus you can style your hair in so many different ways with layers. Layered hairstyles are usually easy to maintain. Layers can be many different lengths, chopped, short or long.
Medium Layers
In a medium-layered hairstyle, the hair has some texture and definition. The back is usually tapered. The front of the layered hairstyle has bangs. Bangs provide a great frame for almost any face shape. If the bangs are left longer, they can be worn down over the face or pushed to the side. Bangs can also be pinned back to the side of the head or woven into the top of the hair if you'd like them to be less prominent.
Medium-length layers are also nice because all the layers can be worn toward the back of the hair, or some of the layers can be moved forward, giving your face a "sharp" frame, especially if you have a razor cut. French braiding for a different look is an option with medium-length layers. Add some hair accessories to the braids to create a unique look.
If you want wavy hair, cut the hair into medium layers, then use a curling iron to curl the top layers back, so they are feathered along the side of your hair. You can then curl the back layers for waves. You can also use a smaller curling iron to create waves in the front and back of the hair, or simply curl the front bangs down onto your forehead and leave the back straight.
