Medium Length Hairstyle Options

By: Aysha Schurman

Medium length hairstyles include a wide array of options. Medium hairstyles can almost always incorporate long and short cuts into their look. Because they're so versatile, the style tends to look good on just about everyone. However, that doesn't mean there aren't certain medium styles that will look much better on you than others.

When going to a hairdresser to ask for a certain style, it's important to remember that hairstyles do not have standardized names. You should always describe the exact cut you want instead of just using a simple title. Even a simple style, such as a choppy bob, may mean something completely different from one stylist to another.

Blunt
A blunt medium hairstyle works best when the bulk of the hair is the same length. The hair will simply be cut straight across at about shoulder length. You can keep your bangs long and your hair straight for a sleek professional look, or have short, straight bangs cut for a more whimsical feel. You can use a little gel to make the hair ends spiky for a punk look.

Bob
A medium bob haircut is lightly layered towards the ends to create a subtle round shape. The hair is usually cut at a slight curve right above the shoulders. The look can be worn with or without bangs, and the bangs options are open, from short to side swept. It's also possible to get a choppy or high layered bob for a more modern look. Any type of bob can have the ends curled in for a sophisticated feel or curled out for a flirty appeal.

Oval
A simple, medium, oval hairstyle is perfect for a more natural look. The hair is cut in an oval shape in back, with the hair in the middle longer than the hair on the outer ends. An oval cut can be shoulder length or shorter and goes with or without bangs. A little light layering around the face is usually recommended, but not necessary. This style looks great straight and extremely seductive with a little curl.

Shag
A medium shag haircut can be worn at or above the shoulders. The hair is layered to create a shaggy silhouette; the ends are usually left uneven. A shag cut is great for its styling ease, and can be as simple as blowing your hair dry and walking out the door. If you want a more involved look, a little root lifter to the top and gel at the tips can give you a shaggy mini-bouffant style.

Slant
A medium slant cut is shorter in the back than it is in the front. The slant can be dramatic or subtle, but the look should be worn without bangs. A slant cut can be cut straight and blunt in one layer, or use several layers all the way to the crown. A slant cut looks best when worn with straight hair. You can leave it natural or use a little gel to create sharp and spiky ends. If you curl the ends in, you can create a slanted bob appearance.
