Skin Fungus Symptoms

Skin fungus infections can develop just about anywhere on your body, including your nail bed, scalp, back, elbows, legs - even between your toes. Symptoms and skin fungus treatment vary depending on where it occurs.

Skin Fungus Infection
Skin fungus growth typically starts from the inside and works its way out. Also know as ringworm, the infection will become visible early on. You'll see a round, red patch and your skin will be broken and irritated.

Athlete's foot
Even those athletically challenged can find themselves with a case of athlete's foot. This fungus is extremely contagious and you can get it by walking barefoot in a communal area or sharing shoes or a towel. Watch for cracking, peeling and scaling on your feet, along with blisters, redness or a skin breakdown. You'll also feel itching, burning or both.

Jock Itch
Again, this isn't a skin fungus that only attacks the sporty types. It's a fungus that grows in warm, moist areas, particularly the inner thighs, buttocks and genitals. Look for flaking, cracking and peeling skin that may be red with a circular, raised rash. You may also experience itching, chaffing and burning.

A classic fungal infection of the skin, ringworm rash looks like a flat red and circular sore or sores. The edges of the sore may be slightly raised and scaly skin can also be present. While not serious, ringworm can be unsightly.

Nail Infections
A fungus growth of the skin beneath the nail starts with mild changes in appearance. You may notice a yellow or brownish hue to the tip of the nail and then it may spread across the nail. Your nails may also become thicker and more brittle.

An easy fungus infection to spot, dandruff occurs when there's an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp, causing a drying effect and flaky, peeling skin.
