Scalp Psoriasis Causes and Treatment

By: Julie Knapp

While it can occur anywhere on your body, scalp psoriasis is one of the most common locations for psoriasis discomfort. Severity can range from slight and mild to severe - thick, crusty skin can come to cover the entire scalp. This inflammation can even appear around the ears, neck and forehead. You'll know it's psoriasis by its silvery sheen and powdery appearance.

Scalp Psoriasis Causes
As is the case with any form of psoriasis, the condition is not contagious. Instead, psoriasis is a genetic disease often passed down from parent to child. Triggers that prompt the emergence of the genetic condition include stress, smoking, weather and infection.

In the particular case of scalp psoriasis, scratching can also make it worse, also causing dandruff-like flakes. Refraining from scratching affected areas is easier said than done, however, as the condition often is an itchy one.

Psoriasis Scalp Treatment
Mild: Look for a medicated shampoo with salicylic acid or coal tar, both ingredients that will tackle your scalp psoriasis. These shampoos can also reduce itching. Steroid injections can also be beneficial to scalp psoriasis, though with mild cases doctors will give them sparingly because they could be absorbed throughout your body.

Moderate to Severe: When scalp psoriasis is more widespread, stronger treatment plans should be considered. Scaling, crusting and swollen lymph nodes may indicate a yeast infection, which can be treated by an antimicrobial treatment. Your doctor may also prescribe a topical treatment or systemic medication. UV light can provide relief for scalp psoriasis sufferers, too. However, since the light needs to reach your scalp, it's best for thin hair or shaved heads. Hand-held UV combs are available, but natural light can have the same effect.
