If you or one of your friends ever visit a salon to fake bake, you should know that it can be a dangerous habit. The next time you think about bronzing your bod under the bulbs, you should consider the facts about tanning bed dangers and share them with your circle of friends.
The bottom line is that tanning beds aren't a safe alternative to baking at the beach-there's no such thing as a safe tan, whether it's from sun exposure or artificial sunlamps. Salon tans significantly increase your risk for malignant melanoma-the most serious and deadly form of skin cancer that can spread quickly through the blood and lymph system to other organs and bones.
Studies show that tanning bed users are also at greater risk for other non-melanoma forms of skin cancers. If you or your doctor discovers a basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, you'll have to have both it and possibly even an area of skin around it removed, which could leave you with a scar.
Besides being risky for your skin, tanning beds can work a number on your eyes, too, if you do not follow proper procedure. The salon provides goggles or stickers to shield your eyes for a reason-without them, you could suffer from a corneal burn. Long-term exposure puts you at greater risk for cataracts.
Also keep in mind that even though you think you're making yourself more beautiful now by getting an insta-glow, you're actually setting yourself up for premature aging and wrinkles down the road. The next time you want to look sun-kissed, instead try-tan building lotions, sunless tanning lotions or spray-mist tanning salons.
Tanning beds do more than just give you a great tan year round. These are a great source of relaxation. With my skin complexion I am only able to do this for 4-5 minutes a day. But I love those few minutes of relaxation. |
If you are like so many of the people out there who dread that first visit to the ever popular tanning bed salon, you probably have all kinds of questions that you are embarrassed to ask anyone about. |
Some think that the phrases tanning bed and safety do not belong in the same sentence but let's face it, most of us will use a tanning bed at some point so why not try to use it as safely as possible. |
