Top Spray-On Tan Mistakes

By: Aysha Schurman

There's not much logic in trying to trick people into thinking you have a healthy glow if you end up looking absurd with a spray-on tan. Something that covers every inch of your skin isn't the sort of product you want to make mistakes with.

Prepare
The most common mistake people make with artificial tans is improper preparation. You skin must be clean, exfoliated and hydrated to achieve an even and natural looking color. If these three requirements are not met, nothing else in the world will make your tan appear flattering.

It doesn't matter if you're doing a home tanning spray or professional airbrush tanning, your skin needs to be clean to properly absorb the color. Exfoliating the skin gets rid of dead patches that can turn orange or otherwise hold too much color. Hydrated skin will be easier to color and the hue will remain for a longer period of time.

Rub spray in
Never forget to rub in sunless tanning sprays if you're doing home application. The spray makes sure that the tanning agents are spread evenly over the top of your skin. You have to rub it in, so the skin absorbs as much as possible, for the full color to develop. If you're doing airbrush spray tanning at home, you don't want to rub the product in as much as wipe the excess off with a towel.

No glove? No glow
Don't get lazy and skip putting on protective gloves. You always need to wear gloves when you're rubbing in any home tanning product, cream or spray. If you don't wear gloves, your hands will end up absorbing most of the product and will definitely turn a noticeable orange hue!

Be curve-centric
Don't forget about all your curves when applying sunless tanning spray. Make sure to use the spray on your armpits, back of your knees and back of your arms. If you're using a face product, don't forget to apply it at the front of the nose and under the chin.

Hydrate
Never allow your newly tanned skin to become dehydrated. You must use lotion to help develop and maintain any tan, artificial or real. The more dry skin you have, the more skin sloughing off your body and the more color you'll loose as new skin is regenerated.
