Make Shampoo to Soothe Your Dry Scalp

Using the right shampoo and conditioner is vital when it comes to combating a dry scalp, because the very health of your hair depends on the health of your scalp. However, brands that fight a dry scalp are often more expensive than your run of the mill hair products. To aid your budget and you scalp, try creating some homemade shampoo instead.

Use recipes for gentle homemade shampoos if you have a dry scalp. You don't want something harsh that strips away what little oil your scalp has. Adding oils to the shampoo can help restore the scalp's natural balance. Keep the oils light and gentle or you'll end up with greasy tresses.

Olive oil will be the easiest oil to find for mixing in a homemade shampoo, but jojoba oil usually does a better job restoring a natural moisture balance. Ultimately, almost any oil can be used, it all depends on personal preference.

As with most homemade hair care products, dried herbs can be infused into your shampoo to help boost your moisture levels. Steer clear of adding too many plants that may contain excessive amounts of acid, such as citrus oils, or you'll end up drying your skin and hair out even further.

To alleviate an itchy scalp, infuse your shampoo with catnip leaves. To help combat dandruff, try burdock root, peppermint and/or thyme. For a general moisture boost, use chamomile, elderflowers and/or comfrey.

If you've been scratching at your itchy scalp, you may need to add something to your shampoo to help sanitize the skin and prevent inflammation. A little distilled white or apple cider vinegar can help kill nasty bacteria.
